Card Condition Guide

A clear, honest, collector‑first standard for evaluating raw cards.

At Grant’s Gradables, we believe every collector deserves transparency, consistency, and confidence when buying or selling cards. We evaluate cards and determine conditions based on TCGplayer’s published conditioning guidelines.

This guide explains exactly how we evaluate raw cards before they reach your collection.

TCGplayer's Condition Standards

Near Mint (NM)

Cards in Near Mint condition show minimal wear from handling or storage. According to TCGplayer, NM cards may have:

  • A nearly unmarked surface
  • Crisp corners
  • Clean edges
  • Very slight edge wear or a couple of minor scratches

Overall appearance: almost pack‑fresh.

Lightly Played (LP)

LP cards show minor signs of play, but nothing severe. TCGplayer notes that LP cards may include:

  • Minor border or corner wear
  • Light scuffs or scratches
  • Noticeable imperfections that are still mild

Overall appearance: light wear but still clean and attractive.

Moderately Played (MP)

MP cards show visible wear from regular play. Based on TCGplayer standards, MP cards may include:

  • Border wear
  • Corner wear
  • Scratching or scuffing
  • Whitening
  • Small creases that do not affect structural integrity

Overall appearance: well‑played but structurally sound.

Heavily Played (HP)

HP cards show significant wear and may have structural issues. TCGplayer defines HP as cards with:

  • Major border/corner wear
  • Heavy scratching or scuffing
  • Whitening
  • Bends or creases
  • Imperfections that may affect integrity but remain sleeve‑playable

Overall appearance: heavily worn but still usable.

Damaged (DMG)

Damaged cards show wear beyond all other categories. TCGplayer lists examples such as:

  • Large creases
  • Water damage
  • Tears
  • Missing pieces
  • Ink or substance stains
  • Structural issues affecting playability or authentication

Overall appearance: severely compromised, but still collectible depending on rarity.

Our Process

How We Assess Card Conditions

Every card in our collection undergoes a rigorous evaluation process to ensure authenticity and accurate grading. Our expert team follows industry-leading standards to provide you with complete confidence in your purchase.
1

Visual Inspection

We examine each card under professional lighting to identify surface wear, corner damage, edge quality, and centering. Every detail matters in determining the card's condition.

2

Authentication Verification

All graded cards are verified through PSA's certification database. We cross-reference certification numbers and slab characteristics to guarantee authenticity.

3

Grading Standards

We adhere to PSA's 10-point grading scale, from Poor (1) to Gem Mint (10). Each grade reflects specific criteria for corners, edges, surface, and centering.

4

Documentation & Photography

High-resolution images capture every angle of the card and slab. Detailed descriptions note any unique characteristics, ensuring transparency in every listing.
